I. Data Import for Brokerages

TAPro supports several import methods, including Sync Import. For some brokerages we created custom imports. To improve and automate file import, please have your broker contact use.

If you encounter any problems with data import, please pause and send us the file. We can quickly identify and fix common data issues. 2012 brokerage data file formats are changing without notification. This means a file can have new fields that automatic import does not expect. In general it is best to only import transactions data like Buy and Sell. Exclude data like Journal or Cash etc.

II. Where is my Brokerages

If your brokerage is not on this list you can still import transaction history data by obtaining a file from the brokerage website or their clearing firm. Then use File/Import/Transaction to import the file. There are several types of files, .OFX (Quicken/Money) is an easy file to import so look for that first.

If your brokerage only offers Excel files then download the file and save it as .CSV or .TXT.

TAPro includes a file import wizard to help import files. Review Excel, .CSV and .TXT files to make sure they include the following fields:

date, action, quantity, symbol, price, fee, commission.

You can let TA calculate the Amount. It can also recalculate Price by using other fields like Amount. It can also help to remove none trade data from the file.

See the examples on this page.

Because the new list of sync supported brokerages now includes 400+ entries (within TAPro), we will add brokerage names to the above table and create detailed instructions as brokerages express interest in supporting TAPro. We have spent years working on import solutions and each season brokerages make changes. With brokerage support it is easier to improve the customer experience. We depend on customers to ask their brokerage to provide active support.

III. Legacy Imports

These import solutions are obsolete but we will keep them on the site this season. If you are a financial institution and are seeking custom conversions solutions as a web service, please contact us to obtain a copy of this code.

TAPro includes a file import utility.  During file import TAPro remembers your decisions and creates an Import Template for the selected broker and file type.  During the next import of the same file type, for the same broker, you can reuse a template and apply prior decisions automatically.  TAPro maps import field names to standard field names.  Fields that are not mapped are assigned the name "extra" and not imported.

During import TAPro confirms symbol types (stocks, Calls, Puts etc.).  If the data includes Exercise/Assign/Expire events then also define the option's underlying details after the import (using File/Add Modify Symbols).

Here is a video with more details - click here.

Here is a list of field names that TAPro can import:

Date Transacted, Date Settled, Action, Quantity, Symbol, Description, Price, Commission, Sec. Fee, Misc. Fee, Fed. Tax, Ex./Assign Basis Adj, Basis Adj, Amount, Account, ID, Note

Below are suggestions of how to import various file types.

A. QFX/OFX Import:
Downloads to Quicken(tm)/Money(tm) often use .QFX/.OFX.  Remember to save the file with an extension of .QFX or .OFX so TAPro can identify it correctly.  Within TAPro select File/Import/File.

Here is a video with more details - click here.

B. QIF Import:
Downloads to Quicken(tm)/Money(tm) also use .QIF format.  Remember to save the file with an extension of .QIF so TAPro can identify it correctly.  Within TAPro select File/Import/File.

C. TAB Delimited Import:
Download the file in an Excel format offered.  Open the file and save the file as TAB Delimited (using Excel, File/Save As/...).  Within TAPro select File/Import/File.

If you edit the file with Excel or Notepad, consider the following simplified format:

Date Transacted, Action, Quantity, Symbol, Price, Commission
03/20/2006  Buy  100.00  CSCO  22  9.95

D. CSV Delimited Import:
Download the file in an Excel format offered.  Open the file and save the file as Comma Delimited (using Excel, File/Save As/...).

Here is a video of .CSV import with more details - click here.

If you edit the file with Excel or Notepad, consider the following simplified format:

Date Transacted, Action, Quantity, Symbol, Price, Commission
03/20/2006, Buy, 100.00, CSCO, 22, 9.95

Data is sometimes provided as one long quoted row that looks like the example below.

"03/20/2006, Buy, 100.00, CSCO, 22, 9.95"

This will cause an error because the quotes at the end of the string define it as one field instead of comma separated fields.  The file does not follow the .CSV standard.  This is easily corrected with Notepad, search for " and replace it with nothing.

03/20/2006, Buy, 100.00, CSCO, 22, 9.95

Watch for commas hidden in number fields.  The example below will cause and error because the thousands separator is a comma.

09/20/2006, Buy, 1,000.00, CSCO, 22, 9.95

In Excel, select all columns with numbers, select "Format Cells", select "Number" and remove the check mark from the "Use 1000 Separator" box, see below.
